About Bide sauna

Who are we?

The team behind Bide sauna is Kieran, Thomas and Paul and it was born out of our genuine excitement and love of sauna experiences and culture. After months of research and learning all we could about the details, protocols and benefits we took the plunge and decided to open our own.

Sharing our enthusiasm

We have benefited so much from integrating sauna into our lives - we want to share this with as many people as possible. We aim to promote sauna culture as a tool for improving community well-being in Scotland.

Why “bide”?

Bide is a Scots word that means ‘to stay’. For us this sums up all you need to do to unlock all the benefits of a sauna. The act of slowing down, staying in one place and being mindful of the present moment is all you have to do, the healing powers of the sauna warmth does the rest.

To “bide your time” means to be patient and wait for the right moment, this philosophy fits perfectly with the slower and more relaxed ethos we want to inspire through Bide sauna.

Our favourite sauna terms and tips

Löyly

Löyly is the Finnish term for the steam that is created when water is poured on hot sauna coals. For us there nothing more relaxing and satisfying, especially when combined with essential oils.

Sisu

Although we recommend not to push yourself too far in the sauna (health is always the most important thing!) the Finnish term Sisu really inspires us. Without a direct translation in English it suggests strength, perseverance and tenacity in the face of challenges. Sometimes, the act of surrendering to a hot sauna session, especially when combined with cold water exposure, can be a mentally strengthening exercise. Sisu reminds us of our inner strength and capacity to move through hard things.
